Why this site exists, how the island matching works, and what we will not do — no sponsored results, no fake enthusiasm, no invented recommendations.
Greek Island Match exists to answer one question honestly: which Greek island is right for you? Not which island is prettiest in photographs, or which one a tour operator wants to fill this season — which one fits the way you actually travel.
Why this site exists
Greece has more than 200 inhabited islands. Search for advice and you get the same six names, ranked in the same order, on every site. That is useless if you are traveling with a toddler, or on a tight budget, or you want to walk all day and eat well at night. Santorini is a bad choice for most families. Mykonos is a bad choice for anyone who wants quiet. Nobody says so, because saying so does not sell hotel bookings.
So every guide here has a section called “Who should skip this island”. It is the most useful part of the page, and it is the reason the site exists.
How the matching works
Every island in our database is scored on thirteen traits: nightlife, quiet, beaches, hiking, family-friendliness, price level, luxury, history and culture, ease of access, island-hopping potential, romance, food, and size. The two-minute quiz asks eight questions about how you travel, weights those traits accordingly, and returns the best fit plus two alternatives worth considering.
The scores come from travel on the islands, ferry and flight timetables, and the practical details that decide whether a week works or does not: whether you need a car, whether the meltemi wind will cancel your boat trip, whether anything is open in October.
What we do not do
- No sponsored results. No island can pay to rank higher in the quiz or in any comparison. The scoring is the same for everyone who takes it.
- No fake enthusiasm. If an island has become too expensive, too crowded, or too hard to reach without a car, the guide says so.
- No invented recommendations. We name villages, beaches and areas — real, findable places — rather than a list of hotels and restaurants nobody has checked.
- No affiliation with any tourism board, hotel group, or ferry company.
Who writes this
Greek Island Match is an independent project, written and maintained by a small team of travelers who have spent years going back to the same sea and arguing about which island is best. The honest answer, after all that, is that it depends on you — which is the whole point of the quiz.
Corrections
Ferry schedules change, tavernas close, a quiet beach gets a road. If something here is out of date or wrong, tell us and we will fix it — get in touch. Corrections from people who live on the islands are especially welcome.
