How We Make Money

We earn commission when you book through some links, at no extra cost to you. No island can pay to rank higher, and no verdict is ever softened.

Greek Island Match is free to read and always will be. This page explains how the site pays for itself, because you should know that before you trust a recommendation.

Some links on this site go to booking sites — ferries, flights, hotels, car rental and tours. If you book something after following one of those links, the company pays us a small commission. You pay exactly the same price. The commission comes out of the booking site’s margin, not your pocket.

Affiliate links are marked. Where a link earns us money, you will see it labelled or noted nearby. If a link is not marked, it earns us nothing.

What money does not buy

  • No island can pay to rank higher. The quiz scores every island on the same thirteen traits. Nobody can buy a better score, a better position in a comparison, or a place on a “best for” list.
  • No sponsored guides. We do not accept payment to write about an island, a hotel or a tour, and we do not publish guest posts from anyone selling something.
  • No softened verdicts. Every island guide has a section called “Who should skip this island”. Those sections are the reason the site exists, and no commercial relationship changes what they say. If an island has become too expensive or too crowded, we say so — including for islands where we earn a commission.
  • No hidden relationships. We are not owned by, funded by or affiliated with any tourism board, hotel group, ferry company or tour operator.

The alternatives are worse. Advertising would mean handing over part of the page to whoever bids highest. A paywall would mean the guides only reach people who already trust us. Sponsored content would mean writing what someone else wants written. Affiliate commissions are the only model we have found where our incentive — helping you pick the right island — stays pointed the same way as yours.

It only works if the recommendation is right. If we send you to an island that does not suit you, you have a bad holiday and you never come back. That is a far bigger loss to us than any single commission.

Cookies and tracking

When you follow an affiliate link, the booking site records that you arrived from here, usually with a cookie that lasts around 30 days. We do not see your name, your card details or what you booked — only anonymous totals. We also use Google Analytics to see which guides get read. See our privacy policy for the details.

If something here looks like a conflict of interest, ask us about it — get in touch. If you would rather not use our links at all, that is completely fine: the guides are the same either way, and you can search for any island or booking site directly.
