Frequently asked questions
What is the best Greek island to visit for the first time?
Paros, Naxos and Crete are the safest first picks. They combine good beaches, real towns, reasonable prices and easy logistics, and none of them will feel like a mistake. Santorini and Mykonos are spectacular but expensive and crowded — better as a two-night add-on than a whole week.
Which Greek islands have direct flights?
From most of Europe you can fly directly (at least in summer) to Crete (Heraklion and Chania), Rhodes, Corfu, Kos, Zakynthos, Kefalonia, Santorini, Mykonos, Skiathos, Samos, Lesbos, Karpathos and Lemnos. Lefkada is reached via Preveza airport on the mainland, and Thassos via Kavala. Everything else means a ferry or a domestic hop from Athens.
Is it better to stay on one island or island-hop?
For a week, one island (or two close ones like Paros and Naxos) is more relaxing and cheaper. Island-hopping makes sense with ten days or more, and works best in the Cyclades where ferries run several times a day. The Ionian and Dodecanese islands are further apart and better enjoyed one at a time.
When is the best time to visit the Greek islands?
Late May to June and September to early October: warm sea, lower prices, fewer people and everything still open. July and August are hot, busy and windy (the meltemi in the Cyclades). From November to April most islands go quiet, and many hotels and ferries stop — Crete, Rhodes and Corfu are the best off-season choices.
