The evening moves to Little Venice for sunset cocktails, then the lanes of Chora fill with bars, and after two the crowd heads to Cavo Paradiso, a clifftop superclub above Paradise beach that books the biggest names in house and techno all summer.

The catch is cost and crowds. A cocktail in Chora can run twenty euros, beach club sunbeds and tables are priced like a hotel room, and August is a crush. Base yourselves in Chora if you want to walk home, or along the south coast at Platis Gialos or Paraga if the beach clubs are the point. Mykonos has an international airport and fast ferries to Paros, Naxos, and Santorini.

Ios

Ios has been the backpacker party island for fifty years and still does it better than anyone. The Chora is a cluster of whitewashed lanes that turn into one continuous bar crawl from eleven, with a main square where everyone eventually ends up, and Mylopotas beach below it has beach bars and a huge hostel-and-club complex that runs pool parties by day. Drinks are cheap, the crowd is mostly eighteen to thirty, and nobody is dressing up.

The catch is that Ios is a one-note island in July and August: if you are not there to party, or you are over thirty-five, you will feel it. Stay in Chora for the bars or on Mylopotas for the beach, and note that Ios has no airport, so you arrive by ferry from Santorini in about thirty-five minutes or from Piraeus in four to seven hours.

Paros

Paros is the grown-up party island. Naousa, a fishing harbor on the north coast, has bars lining the old port and the lanes behind it, where the evening starts with cocktails at the water’s edge and moves to open-air clubs on the edge of town. Parikia, the ferry port, has a cheaper and younger strip along the seafront, and there are beach clubs at Punda and along the east coast that run daytime parties.

The catch is that the scene is still a step down from Mykonos in scale, and in June or September it is quiet. Base yourselves in Naousa for the best of it, and use the airport or the frequent ferries to Mykonos if you want one big night out on the neighbor.

Zakynthos

Zakynthos is the Ionian answer to Ios. The Laganas strip is roughly a kilometer of bars, clubs, and fast food that runs until dawn from late June to early September, with foam parties, drink deals, and the biggest nightclubs in the Ionian. Boat parties leave from the harbor most afternoons, and the beach is next to the strip, so the day and the night blur together.

The catch is that Laganas is unashamedly a British package-resort strip, which is either the appeal or the deal-breaker. The rest of Zakynthos is calm and pretty and has nothing to do with it. Stay in Laganas if you are there to party, Tsilivi or Argassi if you want a milder version, and use the international airport, which is ten minutes from Laganas.

Kos

Kos does nightlife two ways. Kos Town has a compact bar street near the harbor, a cluster of clubs, and enough open-air venues that you can bar-hop on foot all night. Kardamena, on the south coast, is a resort built around a strip of British bars and a beach, with a younger crowd and cheaper drinks.

The catch is that neither scene has much Greek in it, and the music is chart pop rather than anything a Mykonos regular would recognize. Base yourselves in Kos Town for choice, or Kardamena for the resort-strip experience.

Rhodes

Rhodes is big enough to have two scenes that never meet. Faliraki’s bar street, a few streets back from the beach, is loud, young, and cheap, with clubs open until five. Rhodes Town has a bar street of its own near the New Town seafront, cocktail bars inside the medieval walls, and a more mixed, older crowd.

The catch is that Faliraki has quieted since its peak twenty years ago, and the island is spread out, so pick one base. Faliraki for the party, Rhodes Town for variety, and rent a car if you want both. The airport takes direct flights from across Europe all summer.

Skiathos

Skiathos is the Sporades’ party island, which is a lower bar than the Cyclades but a real scene nonetheless. Skiathos Town has bars along the old port and up Papadiamantis street, a couple of proper clubs on the edge of town, and a crowd that mixes Greeks, Italians, and Brits. By day, beach bars at Koukounaries and along the south coast run into the evening.

The catch is that the season is short, roughly mid-June to early September, and the town is small enough that you will see the same faces every night. Stay in Skiathos Town and walk everywhere; the airport takes direct summer flights and ferries connect to Skopelos.
