Folegandros Travel Guide: Is Folegandros Right for You?
Folegandros has a cliff-top Chora, wild beaches and almost no crowds. Honest guide to who this small Cycladic island suits, who should skip it and when.

Folegandros is right for you if you want Santorini’s drama without Santorini’s crowds: a whitewashed Chora perched 200 meters above the sea, a handful of wild beaches and evenings in a village square under plane trees. It is not right for you if you want sandy beaches you can drive to, nightlife, shopping or an airport.

Who Folegandros is for
Folegandros is for people who have seen the famous islands and want the feeling those islands used to give. The Chora is one of the finest in the Cyclades: a medieval Kastro quarter of houses built into the walls, three linked squares shaded by trees, and a zigzag path climbing to the church of Panagia on the cliff, from where the whole island and the sunset lay out below you.
Couples come here for that view, for slow dinners in the squares and for the sense of being somewhere unspoiled. Walkers get old paths through terraced hills to beaches you can only reach on foot.
Who should skip Folegandros
Skip Folegandros if you need beaches with sand, sunbeds and a car park. Most of the good ones are reached by a 20 to 40-minute walk down a hot path, or by the summer boats from Karavostasis and Agali, and several have no shade or facilities. Families with small children will find the logistics wearing.
Be honest about seasickness too. Folegandros sits in the exposed southern Cyclades and the fast ferries from Piraeus can be a rough four hours when the meltemi blows. And if your trip is under a week in total, the travel time makes it hard to justify unless you pair it with Santorini or Milos.
What to actually do on Folegandros
Climb to Panagia at sunset
The whitewashed church above Chora is reached by a wide, switchbacking path in 15 minutes. Go for sunset, or at dawn with nobody at all.
Swim at Katergo, Agali and Agios Nikolaos
Katergo is the best beach: a long cove of pebbles and clear water under cliffs, reached by a 30-minute walk from Livadi or the boat from Karavostasis. Agali is the only beach with a road, a bus and tavernas; from there a 15-minute coast path leads to Agios Nikolaos, which has a taverna and tamarisk shade, and on to the naturist beach at Livadaki.
Walk the old paths from Ano Meria
Ano Meria is a scattering of farms along the western spine. Trails drop from here to the beaches of Ampeli, Livadaki and Agios Georgios on the north coast, and to the lighthouse at Aspropounta.
Eat matsata and sourotó
Matsata is the island’s hand-cut pasta, served with rooster or rabbit in tomato sauce; sourotó is a soft, sour local cheese.
Take the boat around the island
Small boats from Karavostasis do a full circuit in summer, stopping at beaches you cannot otherwise reach and at the sea caves of Georgitsi and Chrysospilia.
Where to stay on Folegandros
- Chora: the obvious choice; walk to the squares, the Panagia path and the bus. Rooms with cliff views on the western edge are the most romantic on the island.
- Karavostasis: the port, with a small beach, a few tavernas and the boat excursions; practical and cheaper, 3 km below Chora.
- Agali: the only beach settlement, small and quiet, for people who want to swim first thing.
- Ano Meria: scattered rooms among farms for walkers and people who want total silence.
When to go
June and September are the months. July and August bring the meltemi, which on Folegandros means ferry delays, choppy north-coast beaches and dusty afternoons, plus the island’s only real crowds, mostly Italians and Greeks in the first three weeks of August. The sea is warmest in September at 24 to 25 C and the wind settles. October is calm and quiet but ferry schedules thin out; from November to Easter the island has a few hundred residents and one or two ferries a week.
Getting there and around
Fly to Athens and take the fast ferry from Piraeus, about four hours, or fly to Santorini (JTR) or Milos (MLO) and connect by a one- to two-hour ferry; in summer this is often the smarter route, since Santorini has direct flights from most of Europe. On the island, the bus meets ferries and runs between Karavostasis, Chora, Agali and Ano Meria. Rent a scooter or a small car for a day or two if you want to reach trailheads; otherwise walk and use the beach boats.
Folegandros vs the alternatives
Santorini has the caldera, the airport and the crowds; Folegandros has the cliff-top village and the quiet. Sifnos has better beaches, better food and more to do, but less drama. Three nights is right for most people, four if you want to walk. It pairs naturally with Santorini or Milos, each an hour or two away by ferry, so a week split between two islands is the classic plan.
Is Folegandros expensive?
Mid to high in July and August, when the small stock of rooms fills and cliff-view hotels in Chora charge 200 euros and up. In June and September prices drop sharply; dinner for two with wine is typically 40 to 60 euros.
Does Folegandros have an airport?
No. The closest airports are Santorini (JTR) and Milos (MLO), both connected by ferry in one to two hours. From Athens the fast ferry takes about four hours.
