Skiathos suits beach lovers, families and first-timers who want sand, pines, an airport and a lively town, but not solitude seekers. Honest 2026 guide.

Skiathos is right for you if you want sandy beaches, pine trees down to the water, a lively harbor town and an airport, all on an island small enough to cover in a week without a car. It is not right for you if you want somewhere unspoiled or cheap in August, or if you dislike sharing your beach with a lot of other people.

Who Skiathos is for
Skiathos has more than 60 beaches on a very small island, and most of them are sand rather than pebble, which is unusual for Greece. Koukounaries, at the western end of the bus route, is a curve of fine gold sand backed by a pine forest and a lagoon. Along the road back to town there are a dozen more, Banana, Agia Paraskevi, Troulos and Vromolimnos among them, all reachable by bus.
Families like it because the beaches are shallow and organized, the town is walkable and there are pedal boats and water sports everywhere. Couples like it because Skiathos Town is one of the prettiest harbor towns in the Aegean after dark, with restaurants on the old port and bars along the waterfront.
It also suits first-timers: direct flights land you ten minutes from your hotel and the whole island fits into a week.
Who should skip Skiathos
Skiathos is busy. In July and August the south-coast beaches are wall-to-wall sunbeds, the bus is packed and the town feels like one long bar. If you want empty coves, take the boat to Skopelos or Alonissos. Hikers get pine-forest paths rather than mountains. And if you want a bargain, this is not the island: the airport and the Mamma Mia! fame keep prices firmly above the mainland Sporades ports.
What to actually do on Skiathos
Koukounaries and the south-coast beaches
Take the bus to the last stop for Koukounaries, walk through the pines to the sand and then, if it is too busy, walk 15 minutes west over the headland to Banana beach.
Lalaria by boat
Lalaria on the north coast is the island’s postcard: white pebbles, a natural rock arch and blindingly clear water. There is no road, so you take a boat from the old port, ideally on a calm day since the north coast gets the wind.
Kastro
The medieval capital sits on a rock at the northern tip, abandoned in the 1800s and now a ruin with a couple of churches and a spectacular view. Walk in from the road end in 30 minutes and swim at the beach below.
Skiathos Town and the Bourtzi
Spend an evening wandering the lanes behind the old port, then walk out along the Bourtzi, a small wooded peninsula with a cafe and a view over both harbors.
Day trip to Skopelos
Fast boats reach Skopelos Town in about 30 minutes, or Glossa in 10 to 15. The Mamma Mia! church at Agios Ioannis Kastri is near Glossa and stunning regardless of the film.
Where to stay on Skiathos
- Skiathos Town: for nightlife, restaurants and the ferries; noisy near the waterfront, quieter in the upper lanes.
- Koukounaries and Troulos: the western beach zone, best for families who want to walk to the sand.
- Megali Ammos and Vasilias: just outside town, walkable to both the beach and the harbor; good for couples.
- Kolios and Achladies: mid-coast resorts on the bus route, quieter than town and central for beach-hopping.
When to go
June and September are the months to aim for: warm sea around 23 to 24 C, everything open, beaches busy but not absurd. July and August are the peak and the island fills; stay at the western end and go to the beach early. The meltemi is milder here than in the Cyclades, but Lalaria trips get cancelled on windy days; the south coast is nearly always calm. May and early October are pleasant with a sea around 20 to 21 C and prices dropping. In winter the island is very quiet.
Getting there and around
Skiathos Airport, has direct summer flights from the UK, Italy, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Scandinavia and Poland, and year-round flights from Athens. Ferries and hydrofoils run from Volos and Agios Konstantinos on the mainland, both about 1.5 hours by fast boat and up to 2.5 hours by conventional ferry, with Athens buses connecting at Agios Konstantinos.
You do not need a car. The bus runs from town to Koukounaries with numbered stops for every beach, and water taxis from the old port serve the beaches and the north coast.
Skiathos vs the alternatives
Skopelos is bigger, greener and calmer, with a more beautiful town and pebble beaches instead of sand, but no airport. Alonissos is quieter still, with a marine park and serious hiking. Is Skiathos expensive?
More than Skopelos and Alonissos, less than Mykonos or Santorini. Sunbeds and cocktails are priced for tourists, but apartments away from the waterfront and ordinary tavernas remain reasonable.
How many days do you need in Skiathos?
Four to five days covers the beaches, a boat trip to Lalaria and Kastro, and the town. A week lets you add Skopelos as a day trip.
Does Skiathos have an airport?
Yes, Skiathos Airport (JSI) is 3 km from town. It is the only airport in the Sporades, which is why Skiathos is the usual entry point for Skopelos and Alonissos too.
