Naxos
Naxos wins because of its west coast: Agios Prokopios, Agia Anna, and Plaka run one after the other for several kilometers of fine sand with water that stays waist-deep a long way out. Tavernas sit on the sand and sunbeds are cheap by Cyclades standards. Naxos Town has the Portara, a marble temple doorway kids can climb around, and a Venetian castle quarter to get lost in.
The catch is getting there. The airport is tiny and served mostly by Athens flights, so most families arrive by ferry from Piraeus, which takes three and a half to six hours, or from Mykonos or Santorini. Base yourselves in Agios Prokopios or Agia Anna for the beach, or Naxos Town for restaurants, and rent a car for a day to see Halki and the mountain villages.
Crete
Crete is not really an island so much as a small country, and that is its family advantage. Heraklion and Chania both take direct flights from across Europe, so there is no ferry with a toddler and a stroller. There are water parks near Hersonissos and Chania, the Minoan palace at Knossos for a morning of myth, and beaches from the pink sand of Elafonisi to the long, organized strands around Rethymno. Older kids can do the Samaria Gorge, sixteen kilometers downhill to the sea.
The catch is that distances are long and the island cannot be seen from one base. The strip between Heraklion and Hersonissos is the least charming part, so choose the Chania side for beaches and Venetian streets, or Rethymno as a compromise. Budget for a rental car for the entire stay.
Corfu
Corfu is the softest of the Greek islands: cypress trees, olive groves, and a coast of small coves rather than exposed beaches. The northeast, around Kalami, Agni, and Kassiopi, has calm, clear water and pebbly bays that suit families with snorkeling-age kids, while Sidari and Acharavi in the north are sandy and shallow. Corfu Town has arcades, a huge fortress, and gelato on every corner. Aqualand near Agios Ioannis is one of the biggest water parks in Greece.
The catch is that some resorts, Kavos in particular, are loud package-holiday strips, and the west coast around Paleokastritsa gets crowded with day trips in August. Stay on the northeast coast if you are driving, or in Corfu Town itself if you are not.
Rhodes
Rhodes is the island for families who want history with their sand. The medieval Old Town, with its walls, moat, and Street of the Knights, is a castle you can eat dinner inside, and Lindos has an acropolis above a horseshoe bay. The east coast beaches at Tsambika, Faliraki, and Kolymbia are sandy and sheltered, the water park at Faliraki is a full day out, and the Valley of the Butterflies is a shady walk in the heat. Rhodes is also warm well into October, which suits families tied to school holidays.
The catch is that Faliraki has a nightlife strip that older teenagers will find and younger ones should not, and the west coast is windy and pebbly. Stay around Kolymbia, Pefkos, or Lindos, or in the Old Town if you want atmosphere over beach.
Kos
Kos is the easy option. It is flat, with a proper network of cycle paths along the coast from Kos Town to Tigaki and Marmari, and the beaches on the north coast are sandy, shallow, and lined with family resorts. The airport is in the middle of the island, so transfers rarely exceed thirty minutes, and there are direct flights from most of Europe. The Asklepion is a good half-morning and Zia village does the sunset.
The catch is that Kos is more resort than Greek village, and Kardamena in the south is a party town. Base yourselves in Tigaki or Marmari for the beach and the bike paths, or in Kos Town for cafes, the castle, and the boat trips to Nisyros volcano.
Paros
Paros gives you the whitewashed Cyclades look without Santorini’s cliffs, stairs, and prices. Naousa has a sheltered bay, the beaches at Kolymbithres and Santa Maria have granite boulders to climb on and calm water, and Aliki in the south is a quiet fishing village with a shallow beach. The airport has several Athens flights a day, and ferries run to Naxos and Santorini for a two-island trip.
The catch is that Paros has a lively bar scene in Naousa and Parikia by August, and the meltemi wind can make beaches on the exposed side uncomfortable. Stay in Naousa for convenience or Aliki for calm, and take the ten-minute ferry to Antiparos for a day at Psaraliki beach.
Skiathos
Skiathos packs around sixty beaches into an island you can drive across in half an hour. Koukounaries is a long crescent of pale sand backed by a pine forest, the beaches along the south coast all have shade and shallow water, and a bus runs the length of the road so you do not need a car. Islands to avoid for families
Santorini is stairs, cliffs, and pebble beaches, and its prices punish anyone booking more than one room. Mykonos is expensive and built for adults. Hydra has no cars, no sandy beaches, and a lot of stone steps, which is lovely for a couple and miserable with a stroller. Folegandros and Amorgos are remote, hilly, and short on beach facilities. All are worth a visit once the kids are teenagers.
