Lefkada Travel Guide: Is Lefkada Right for You?
Lefkada is for beach hunters, windsurfers and families with a car, not for party-goers or fly-and-flop travelers. Honest guide to beaches and access.

Getting there: There's no airport on Lefkada — fly to Preveza/Aktion (PVK) on the mainland and drive about 30 minutes across the causeway, or drive from Athens in roughly 4.5 hours.
Lefkada is right for you if beaches are the whole point: its west coast has the best sand-and-turquoise combination in the Ionian, and you can drive there from the mainland without a ferry. It is not right for you if you want to fly straight onto the island, avoid mountain roads, or need a lively town to come back to at night.

Who Lefkada is for
If you rank islands by beaches, Lefkada wins the Ionian. Porto Katsiki, Egremni and Kathisma on the west coast are long strips of pale sand and pebble under sheer white cliffs, with water that shades from clear to milky turquoise because of the limestone.
Windsurfers and kitesurfers know Vasiliki in the south, where a reliable thermal wind called Eric builds every afternoon across the bay: flat water and light wind in the morning for beginners, strong and gusty by 3 pm for everyone else. Sailors know Nydri and Lefkada Town marina as the start of the classic Ionian flotilla circuit.
It also works for families with a car: a villa near Nydri, beach days on the west coast and boat trips to Meganisi and the glassy east-coast coves.
Who should skip Lefkada
There is no airport, so every trip involves a transfer from Preveza or a long drive,. Nightlife is limited to bars in Nydri, Vasiliki and Lefkada Town; nobody comes here to club. The west-coast beaches involve serious descents: Porto Katsiki has about 100 steps, and Egremni’s long staircase was destroyed in the 2015 earthquake, rebuilt, and then damaged again by rockfall. It has been cleared privately but not formally certified, so many visitors reach Egremni by boat from Vasiliki instead.
What to actually do on Lefkada
The west-coast beaches
Start with Kathisma, the most accessible, with sunbeds and tavernas at the northern end and empty sand to the south. Porto Katsiki, in the far southwest, is the dramatic one, a narrow cove beneath a curved cliff, best in afternoon light. Egremni is the longest and wildest.
Vasiliki and the wind
Even if you do not surf, Vasiliki is a pleasant low-key village with a long beach, evening tavernas on the harbor and boats to Egremni and Porto Katsiki.
Boat day to Meganisi
From Nydri, small boats and self-drive motorboats go to Meganisi, ten minutes across the strait, with the Papanikolis sea cave, quiet pebble coves and Spartochori village on the hill. With four of you, a self-drive boat costs about the same as the tour.
Waterfalls and mountain villages
The Dimosari waterfalls near Nydri are a short walk up a gorge and a cold swim. Higher up, Karya is a working village on the plateau with plane trees and a lace-making tradition, and the road from there over the spine to the west coast is a great drive.
Lefkada Town
Unlike most Ionian capitals, Lefkada Town was rebuilt after earthquakes in timber and corrugated iron, painted bright colors. It is odd and charming, and the only part of the island that feels alive in October.
Where to stay on Lefkada
- Nydri: the busiest resort, on the sheltered east coast with boat trips, restaurants and calm water; best for families and first visits.
- Agios Nikitas and Kathisma: the west coast, for beach purists who want to be five minutes from the sand.
- Vasiliki: for windsurfers, kitesurfers and anyone wanting a relaxed village base in the south.
- Lefkada Town: for a walkable base with real shops and bars, and the easiest access from Preveza.
When to go
June and September are the best months: 26 to 30 C, sea at 23 to 25 C, west-coast beaches busy but not packed. July and August bring Italians and Greeks by car in large numbers, with prices and beach-parking chaos to match. Lefkada is outside the meltemi zone, but the west coast gets afternoon swell that can close the beaches to swimming on rough days; the east coast stays calm. May and October are lovely and quiet with a sea around 20 C. In winter almost everything except Lefkada Town closes.
Getting there and around
Preveza/Aktion Airport, across the strait on the mainland, has direct summer flights from the UK, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Switzerland, Scandinavia and Poland, plus year-round Athens flights. From the airport it is a 30-minute taxi or hire-car drive across the causeway. Driving from Athens takes about 4.5 hours; the KTEL bus about 5.5. Summer ferries link Vasiliki with Fiskardo on Kefalonia.
Hire a car at the airport. Lefkada Town to Porto Katsiki is 45 km and about an hour; to Vasiliki about 40 minutes. Scooters are fine on the east coast and dangerous on the west.
Lefkada vs the alternatives
Kefalonia has similar cliffs, its own airport and more village charm, but fewer world-class beaches. Zakynthos is easier for a package holiday and much louder.
