Cliffside beach with vivid blue water in the Ionian Sea

Head to head

Kefalonia vs Lefkada: Which Ionian Island Wins?

Kefalonia vs Lefkada compared: beaches, scenery, cost, airports, ferries and who each island suits. An honest verdict plus how to combine both in ten days.

The verdict: Kefalonia is the bigger, more varied island with the more famous beach, better villages and a proper airport, so it wins for a first Ionian trip and for anyone staying a week or more. Lefkada wins if you are driving from the mainland, want a cheaper and shorter break, or are chasing the electric-blue west-coast beaches and windsurfing at Vasiliki. Both have water that makes the Aegean look dull.

Scenery and vibe

Kefalonia is the largest island in the Ionian and it feels like it. Mount Ainos rises to 1,628 meters with a fir forest on top, the coast road from Argostoli to Fiskardo is one of the great drives in Greece, and the island is big enough that Lixouri on the Paliki peninsula, Sami on the east coast and Fiskardo in the north are three different holidays. Assos, a pastel village below a Venetian castle, is the most photographed spot after Myrtos.

Lefkada is smaller and more intimate, and it is not really an island at all in practical terms: a causeway and floating bridge connect it to the mainland, so you can drive on. The east coast facing the mainland is calm and green with a string of satellite islets (Meganisi, Skorpios, Madouri) that make the Nidri waterfront look like a lake. The west coast is the opposite: sheer white cliffs dropping into water so blue it looks edited.

Beaches

Lefkada takes this round. Egremni, Porto Katsiki and Kathisma on the west coast are consistently ranked among the best beaches in Europe, and the color of the water is not exaggerated. The catch is access: Egremni is reached by a long staircase (rebuilt after the 2015 earthquake) or by boat from Nidri or Vasiliki, and Porto Katsiki also involves a steep flight of steps. Milos beach near Agios Nikitas is a quieter alternative. On the east coast, beaches are small and pebbly but the water is flat and warm.

Kefalonia has Myrtos, which is the most famous beach in the Ionian and deserves it from above; on the ground it is large white pebbles, strong waves and no shade. Antisamos near Sami is greener and calmer with beach bars. Petani on Paliki is a smaller Myrtos with a better taverna. Xi has odd rust-colored sand and clay cliffs, and Lourdas and Skala in the south are the family-friendly long sandy stretches. Overall, Kefalonia has more choice but Lefkada has the showstoppers.

Food and nightlife

Neither island is a party destination, and that is part of the appeal. On Kefalonia, Fiskardo is the place for a harborside dinner watching yachts come in, with prices to match. Argostoli has the best everyday tavernas and a lively evening passeggiata along the Lithostroto. Try the Kefalonian meat pie and the island’s Robola white wine, which comes from vineyards on the slopes of Ainos. Lassi, next to Argostoli, has the closest thing to a bar strip.

Lefkada’s food is simpler but very good value: lentils from Eglouvi, salami from Lefkada town, and honest fish tavernas in Vasiliki and Sivota. Nidri is the busiest resort with bars that stay open late in August, but it is a family-and-flotilla crowd rather than a clubbing one. Lefkada town has a proper cafe culture on the main pedestrian street that feels Greek rather than touristy.

Cost

Lefkada is the cheaper island, mainly because the mainland connection keeps supply high and because a large share of visitors are Greeks and Italians who drive over for the weekend. A decent room in Vasiliki or Agios Nikitas costs noticeably less than the equivalent in Fiskardo or Assos. Kefalonia is not expensive by Greek standards outside those two villages, and Argostoli, Lixouri and Skala are all reasonable. Car hire is necessary on both and costs about the same. Boat trips to the west-coast beaches from Nidri are cheap and worth it.

Getting there and around

Kefalonia has its own airport (EFL) south of Argostoli with direct seasonal flights from the UK, Germany, Italy and Scandinavia, plus year-round Athens flights. Ferries connect Poros and Sami to Kyllini and Patras on the mainland, and Sami to Ithaca. Lefkada has no airport. The nearest is Preveza-Aktion (PVK) on the mainland, about 30 minutes by road, with a similar range of summer charters. Alternatively, you can drive from Athens in around four hours, which is why Lefkada is packed with Greek families in August.

Both islands require a car. Kefalonia’s distances are real: Fiskardo to Skala is a two-hour drive. Lefkada is small enough to see everything from one base, but the west-coast beach roads are steep and end in cliff-top car parks that fill by 11am in summer.

Best time to visit

June and September are ideal on both. The Ionian is greener and a little wetter than the Cyclades, so May can still have showers, and October sees the season shut down quickly. Lefkada’s west coast gets afternoon wind, which is why Vasiliki is one of Europe’s best windsurfing beaches from June to August. Kefalonia in August is busy around Fiskardo and Myrtos but easy to escape elsewhere. Lefkada in August is crowded everywhere, with mainland traffic adding to it.

Who should choose Kefalonia

Choose Kefalonia if you have a week or more, want an airport on the island, and value scenery and villages as much as beaches. It is the better family island thanks to Skala and Lourdas, the better island for a romantic stay in Assos or Fiskardo, and the easier one to combine with Ithaca. If you like the Ionian and want more of the same afterward, Corfu and Zakynthos are the obvious next stops.

Who should choose Lefkada

Choose Lefkada if you are driving, if you want the best beaches in the Ionian and are fit enough for the steps, if you windsurf, sail or kitesurf, or if you have four or five days and a tighter budget. It is also the better base for island-hopping by day boat: Meganisi, Kastos and Kalamos are all short trips from Nidri.

Can you do both?

Yes, and it is a natural pairing. Ionion Pelagos runs a daily summer ferry between Fiskardo on Kefalonia and Vasiliki on Lefkada, taking roughly one hour to an hour and a quarter and carrying cars. A good ten-day itinerary is to fly into Kefalonia, spend five or six nights working north from Argostoli to Fiskardo, ferry to Vasiliki, spend four nights on Lefkada, then fly home from Preveza or drive to Athens. The Fiskardo ferry does not run in winter and can be reduced in shoulder months, so confirm the timetable before locking in flights.
