Scenery and vibe
Corfu is the greenest of the large Greek islands, blanketed in olive trees and cypresses, and its long Venetian rule left it looking more Adriatic than Aegean. Corfu Town is the standout: two fortresses, the French-built arcades of the Liston, cricket on the Spianada and tall, peeling Venetian houses. The northeast coast around Kalami, Agni and Kassiopi is a run of pebble coves and villas where the Durrell family once lived, and the south around Kavos is a different island entirely.
Zakynthos is smaller and more sharply divided. The east and south are flat, sandy and developed, with resort strips at Laganas, Tsilivi, Argassi and Alykes. The west and north are a wall of white limestone cliffs dropping into unnaturally blue water, and this is where the famous sights are: Navagio shipwreck beach, the Blue Caves at Skinari and the sea caves at Keri. The island’s identity is its coastline and the loggerhead turtles that nest in Laganas Bay.
Beaches
Zakynthos has the more famous beaches and the better water. Navagio, the shipwreck beneath sheer cliffs, is the most photographed beach in Greece, though it has been closed to landings since rockfalls in 2023; you now see it from the clifftop platform or a boat. Gerakas on the Vasilikos peninsula is a beautiful protected turtle beach, Banana and Agios Nikolaos nearby are long and sandy, Porto Limnionas is a rocky west-coast cove with astonishing water, and Marathonisi is the turtle-shaped islet you swim from on a boat trip.
Corfu’s beaches are good rather than headline-grabbing. The west coast has the best sand: Glyfada, Agios Gordios and Kontogialos are long and golden, with waves when the wind gets up. Paleokastritsa is a series of small coves with green water and monastery views. The northeast is all white pebbles and calm, clear water at Kalami and Kerasia. Corfu is better for swimming from quiet coves; Zakynthos is better for drama and boat trips.
Food and nightlife
Corfu’s food reflects its Venetian past: pastitsada (pasta with a spiced beef or rooster sauce), sofrito (veal in white wine and garlic) and bourdeto (fish in a peppery tomato stew), plus kumquat liqueur and a local ginger beer left over from the British. Nightlife splits cleanly: Kavos in the far south is a raucous, young party resort, while Corfu Town and Ipsos have bars from lively to sedate. Most of the island is quiet at night.
Zakynthos cooks decent, straightforward Greek food, with standouts in Zakynthos Town and the hill villages, though the resorts lean on international menus. The nightlife is bigger and louder than Corfu’s. Laganas is one of the largest party strips in Greece, with clubs and foam parties all summer for a very young crowd. Tsilivi and Argassi have family-friendly bars, and Zakynthos Town has a pleasant waterfront scene.
Cost
Both are good value compared with the Cyclades, and both are dominated by package tourism from northern Europe, which keeps resort prices competitive. Corfu has more high-end options: villas on the northeast coast, boutique hotels in Corfu Town and a few luxury resorts, and the Kassiopi-to-Kalami stretch is steep in August. Zakynthos is generally a touch cheaper for accommodation, especially in Laganas and Tsilivi, though boat trips add up. Car rental, food and drinks cost about the same.
Getting there and around
Corfu’s airport, beside Corfu Town, has direct flights from most of Europe from April to October and year-round Athens links, plus ferries from Igoumenitsa in about ninety minutes, seasonal ferries from Italy and a link to Paxos. Zakynthos airport has a similar spread of summer flights and Athens connections; the ferry from Kyllini in the Peloponnese takes about an hour, and a small summer ferry runs from Agios Nikolaos in the north to Pessada on Kefalonia.
On both islands a car makes a big difference. Corfu is 60 kilometers long with winding roads, and the northeast coast to Paleokastritsa or the south takes real time; buses from Corfu Town are slow. Zakynthos is smaller, but the west coast is only reachable by car or boat. Boat trips to Navagio and the Blue Caves leave from Zakynthos Town, Agios Nikolaos and Porto Vromi.
Best time to visit
The Ionian is greener and wetter than the Aegean, so spring is spectacular on both, with wildflowers in May. June and September are ideal: warm sea, open resorts and manageable crowds. July and August are hot and busy, and this is when Laganas and Kavos are at full volume. On Zakynthos, turtle nesting runs from late May to August with hatching into October, and restrictions in Laganas Bay are strictest then. Corfu Town is worth visiting even in winter; Zakynthos mostly closes from November to April.

Couples and families who want a varied island with culture as well as beaches, walkers (the Corfu Trail runs the length of the island), villa renters, food lovers and anyone who wants a week mixing a historic town with quiet coves. Add Paxos as a day trip from Corfu Town, or combine with Lefkada and Kefalonia on a longer Ionian road trip.

Anyone whose main goal is spectacular water and boat trips, families who want a simple resort holiday in Tsilivi or on the Vasilikos peninsula, young groups heading for Laganas, and travelers who want a shorter, cheaper break with reliable beach weather. It pairs naturally with Kefalonia, a short summer ferry away.
Can you do both?
Yes, but there is no direct ferry, so plan around it. The classic overland route is Corfu to Igoumenitsa by ferry, then a three-and-a-half to four-hour drive south across the Rio-Antirrio bridge to Kyllini, then the hour-long ferry to Zakynthos; with a rental car picked up in Igoumenitsa and dropped in Kyllini it works well. A more scenic version goes via Lefkada and Kefalonia, using the summer Kefalonia-Zakynthos ferry, which turns the trip into a proper Ionian hop over ten days to two weeks.
