Thassos is right for you if you want a green, pine-covered island with genuinely good sandy beaches, low prices and an easy 40-minute ferry from the mainland, whether you drive down from the Balkans or fly into Kavala. It is not the island for Cycladic aesthetics, island-hopping or anyone who dislikes sharing their beach with families in August.

Who Thassos is for
Thassos is the beach island of northern Greece, and the beaches deliver. Golden Beach and Skala Potamia on the east coast are long arcs of fine sand with shallow water, Paradise Beach near Kinira is a sheltered sandy cove backed by pines, and Marble Beach (Saliara) is a startling white-pebble bay reached by dirt track. The pines come right down to the water, so shade is free.
It is also one of the cheapest islands in Greece with real tourism infrastructure. Because most visitors drive in from Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia and northern Greece, prices are set for Balkan budgets, and families get a safe, sandy holiday without paying Paros prices.
Beyond the beaches, the interior is a surprise. Mount Ypsarion rises to 1,204 m, and the old villages of Panagia, Theologos and Kastro, built inland to avoid pirates, keep their stone houses and slate roofs. The mountain tavernas serve goat, pine honey and throumba olives at prices from another decade.
Who should skip Thassos
Thassos is not on any island-hopping route. It connects only to the mainland, the architecture is northern Greek rather than Cycladic, and nightlife in Limenas and Limenaria means bars rather than clubs.
August is the honest caveat. The island’s proximity to the Balkans means that from mid-July to late August the ring road is busy, Golden Beach fills up and the Giola rock pool has a queue.
What to actually do on Thassos
Beach-hop the east coast
Start at Golden Beach, drive south past Kinira to Paradise Beach, then continue to Aliki, where an ancient marble quarry drops straight into turquoise water.
Jump into Giola
Giola is a natural rock pool on the south coast near Astris, filled by the sea and warmed by the sun. Arrive before 10 am in summer or come in September and you may have it to yourself.
Hike Mount Ypsarion
The classic route climbs from Potamia to the 1,204 m summit in three to four hours, with views to Mount Athos and the mainland.
See ancient Thassos in Limenas
The island capital sits on the ancient city: the agora, a hillside theater still used for summer performances, the Gate of Silenus and a small but good archaeological museum.
Where to stay on Thassos
- Golden Beach and Skala Potamia: the best sandy beach base for families and beach-first visitors.
- Limenas (Thassos Town): the ferry port, ancient sites, most restaurants and the only real evening scene.
- Limenaria and Pefkari: the southwest for a quieter, more local feel and easy access to Giola and Aliki.
- Panagia: the mountain village above Golden Beach, cool at night, ideal for walkers and a taste of old Thassos.
When to go
Thassos is greener and wetter than southern Greece, which means a real spring: May is lush and mild at 22 to 25 C, though the sea is a bracing 18 C. June is the best month, with 27 to 30 C days, a warm sea and quiet beaches. July and August are hot and crowded, but the meltemi barely reaches this far north, so the sea stays calm. September is superb: the sea is at its warmest around 24 C, the ring road empties and prices drop. October is still swimmable in a good year. From November to April the island is quiet but not closed, and the ferries from Keramoti run all year.
Getting there and around
There is no airport on Thassos. Kavala Airport (KVA) is the gateway, with direct summer flights from the UK (Jet2, TUI), Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Poland and Scandinavia, and year-round domestic flights from Athens. From KVA it is a 15 minute taxi to Keramoti, where car ferries leave roughly hourly for the 35 to 45 minute crossing to Limenas. Ferries from Kavala port to Skala Prinos take 75 to 90 minutes. Thessaloniki Airport (SKG) is 2 hours by car from Keramoti. On the island, a car or scooter is ideal, though the summer bus circles the ring road several times a day.
Thassos vs the alternatives
Skiathos has similar pine-backed sandy beaches, an airport and far more nightlife, at a higher price. Samos is another green North Aegean island but with pebble coves and much bigger distances. Lefkada matches the drive-in convenience and family appeal with more spectacular beaches and a Ionian rather than Aegean feel. Thassos ranks well in our list of the cheapest Greek islands.

Frequently asked questions
Is Thassos expensive?
No. It is consistently one of the cheapest Greek islands with a full tourism setup. Studios near Golden Beach start around 40 to 60 euros a night in June, a taverna meal for two with wine is 30 to 40 euros, and the Keramoti ferry costs a few euros per passenger plus about 15 to 20 euros for a car.
How many days do you need in Thassos?
Five to seven days is ideal. That gives you the east coast beaches, a Giola and Aliki day, a mountain village or hike, and Limenas. Many Balkan visitors stay two weeks and simply rotate beaches.
Does Thassos have an airport?
No. The nearest is Kavala Airport (KVA) on the mainland, about 15 minutes from the Keramoti ferry. Thessaloniki (SKG) is the larger alternative, about two hours by car from the ferry.
