Best Greek Islands in October: Warmest Weather & Sea

The best Greek island in October is Crete. It is the southernmost big island, the sea is still around 23°C, afternoons average about 24°C, and because Crete has a real economy beyond tourism, its towns do not close when the charter flights stop. The warmest island is Rhodes, a degree or so ahead of Crete in both air and water, and its Old Town and Lindos stay open through the end of the month.

October weather on the islands

Warmth in October is mostly a question of latitude, and the answer is the southeastern corner of the Aegean. Rhodes and Crete keep their summer heat longest. The bigger surprise is rain: the Ionian is as warm as the Cyclades but gets three to four times as much.

Two things the numbers do not show. The sea holds its heat far better than the air, so the water is often the warmest thing about a Greek October, and swimming stays comfortable in the south well after the evenings have turned cool. And an average hides the pattern: the first ten days of October usually feel like late September, while the last ten can bring the first real storm of autumn.

Figures are long-term monthly averages from climatestotravel.com and Hellenic National Meteorological Service data, rounded to whole numbers. Individual years run a degree or two either side, and recent years have tended to be warmer.

Crete

Crete in October is what Crete in July should have been. The sea on the south coast is at its best, the interior is cool enough to walk properly, and the Samaria Gorge is open until its season ends on 31 October, although the park closes it on bad-weather days and posts the notice the evening before. The raki distilling season starts late in the month, with a tsikoudia festival in Rethymno in late October or early November, and the villages around Kissamos in the west hold a chestnut festival at Elos, traditionally on the third Sunday of October, which in 2026 falls on the 18th. The organisers confirm the date only a few days ahead.

The catch is that October is when the first proper rain arrives, usually as one or two short storms in the second half of the month, and the west around Chania gets noticeably more of it than Heraklion in the centre. Rent a car and base yourself in Chania for the west or in Heraklion or Agios Nikolaos for the east. Heraklion is also the safer airport late in the month: it keeps international flights through the winter, while Chania drops to domestic flights once the winter timetable starts on 25 October.

Rhodes

Rhodes has one of the longest seasons in Greece, and October is when it pays off. Daytime highs are around 25°C, the sea at Lindos and along the east coast averages about 24°C, the warmest in this list, and the medieval Old Town, hard work in the summer heat, becomes a place you want to spend an evening.

The catch is that the resort strips at Faliraki and Kolymbia empty out in the second half of the month as their hotels close, so the atmosphere thins quickly if you are staying in the wrong place. Base yourself in the Old Town or in Lindos, and check your return flight: most seasonal routes end with the summer timetable on 24 October.

Santorini

Santorini is a different island in October. The light goes soft and golden, the wineries are quiet enough to talk to someone, and caldera-view rooms drop to prices that make more sense. Early October is still swimming weather at Perissa and Kamari, and the Bronze Age site at Akrotiri is far more pleasant without the summer queues.

The catch is that Santorini is a degree or two cooler and windier than Crete or Rhodes, and by the last week of October a good number of restaurants and hotels in Oia have closed. Aim for the first two weeks, and base yourself in Fira or Imerovigli rather than Oia. Fira is the one town on the island that works all year.

Naxos

Naxos works in October because it does not depend on tourists. The mountain villages of Halki, Filoti and Apeiranthos are busy with their own lives, the Blue Star ferries from Piraeus run all year, and the long beaches south of Chora are empty in a way that feels like a private discovery. It is also the driest island in our table, with about 30 mm of rain for the whole month.

The catch is that the beach bars and much of the accommodation at Plaka close as the month goes on, and the little airport only flies to Athens. Base yourself in Chora, where the tavernas and cafés stay open.

Kos

Kos is the value pick for early and mid October. Charter flights from northern Europe keep running until the winter timetable starts on 25 October, hotel prices fall through the month, and the flat cycle routes between Kos Town, the Asklepieion and the beaches are a pleasure once the heat has broken. The sea still averages about 22°C.

The catch is that Kos is a resort island first, and once the charters stop most of the north-coast hotels close and the only way in is via Athens. Base yourself in Kos Town, which has the ferries, the bike lanes and the best tavernas, and go before the last week.

Paros

Paros holds its season slightly later than the smaller Cyclades. Most of Naoussa’s harbour restaurants stay open into mid-October, there are Athens flights from the island’s airport, and the ferries to Naxos and Santorini keep running. The meltemi, the summer north wind that makes July and August on the north coast a trial, has usually eased by October.

The catch is that Paros shuts faster than Naxos in the second half of the month, and the east-coast beaches lose their tavernas. Base yourself in Naoussa or Parikia and go early in the month.

28 October, Ochi Day. A national holiday marking Greece’s refusal of the Italian ultimatum in 1940. Every island town holds a school and military parade in the morning, and state museums and archaeological sites are free to enter that day.
Chestnut festival at Elos, western Crete. Traditionally the third Sunday of October: roasted chestnuts, chestnut dishes, raki, music and dancing.

Islands to avoid in October

Corfu, Lefkada, Kefalonia and Zakynthos in the Ionian are as warm as the Cyclades but the wettest islands in Greece in autumn, with two to four times the Aegean’s rainfall, most of it in the second half of the month. They are lovely in the first week or two; after that, go east. Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonissos in the Sporades are the coolest islands in this guide, at about 21°C in both air and sea, and wind down through the month. Folegandros, Amorgos, Sifnos and Milos are small enough that many rooms and restaurants close from around the third week, and Mykonos shuts its beach clubs while keeping most of its prices.
